AirAsia plane overshoots runway in Philippines

After the search and tragic discovery of debris and wreckage from AirAsia Flight QZ8501, another one of the airline’s planes is in the news.

Good Morning America reported that an AirAsia Zest plane, carrying 159 passengers, overshot the runway at Kalibo International Airport and ended up in a grassy field Tuesday.

Giovanni Hontomin, who is in charge of AirAsia Zest’s operations, said crew members on board activated an emergency slide to assist passengers in exiting the plane and no injuries were reported.

The aircraft, however, likely sustained some damage and remained stuck in the mud. It will have to be towed from the field.

The flight was traveling from the capital city of Manila.

This incident follows the disappearance and discovery of AirAsia Flight 8501 but, as the Associated Press noted, is actually the third incident involving the airline in the past few days. Boarding on another AirAsia Zest plane was halted Sunday for 184 passengers and crew after some sort of tire problem was reported in the Philippine city of Tagbilaran. The airline initially canceled the flight, but said later that the issue had been resolved.

No further details were given about the extent of that problem.
