Allison Williams explains why you can't 'hate-watch' 'Peter Pan Live!' tonight

Allison Williams and the cast of NBC’s Peter Pan Live! knows that everyone who watched The Sound of Music Live! last year only did it to see how bad it would turn out. But Williams says that you can’t do that and still enjoy Peter Pan.

In an interview with The Daily Beast, the Girls star said that everyone is aware of just how much everyone hated Sound of Music, but they still try to stay positive while rehearsing the new musical. Surprisingly, Williams said that her time on Girls has helped her prepare for the cynics.

“I will say this about last year: today’s audiences like to watch things cynically,” Williams said. “And I’m on a show that’s cynical in tone so I’m no stranger to that.”

Williams said that she knows hatewatching is a thing, but that’s not going to work with her show.

“It’s a whole way of watching something, and it’s not an audience that’s natural to a non-cynical performance,” Williams, who plays the title role, said. “Peter Pan, you cannot watch cynically. If you do, you’re going to hate it, no question. It falls apart instantly.”

Christian Borle, who appeared in Sound of Music and plays Smee and Mr. Darling in Peter Pan, said that he was stunned to even see fellow actors bash Sound of Music during the broadcast.

“People will hear the opening strings of music that they know deep, deep down in their heart, and it will make them nostalgic again. And they’ll crumble,” Williams said. “And they might get one hate-tweet out really quickly, and then we won’t hear from them for a while—because they’ll have been sucked into the sense memory that hopefully will be Peter Pan.”

Peter Pan airs on NBC tonight. Christopher Walken co-stars as Captain Hook.
