Benedict Cumberbatch finally confirmed for Marvel's 'Doctor Strange'

It took awhile, but Marvel Studios finally confirmed today that Benedict Cumberbatch, the most popular British actor on the planet today, will play Doctor Strange.

The studio finally announced that Cumberbatch will play the supernatural character, who discovers the mystical world after a car accident. Scott Derrickson will be directing, with a script from Prometheus writer Jon Spaihts.

“Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity,” producer Kevin Feige said in a statement. “In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”

Cumberbatch has been linked to the role for some time, but he dismissed the rumors in July. However, in October, he was reportedly very close to signing after Joaquin Phoenix dropped out. Still, the studio did not confirm the casting that month, when it unveiled the slate of Phase Three movies.

Doctor Strange will start Marvel’s Phase Three, even though Ant-Man is technically the first movie after Avengers: Age of Ultron is released in May. The film is scheduled for release on Nov. 4, 2016.

Cumberbatch is expected to get his first Oscar nomination for The Imitation Game. He is currently working on the upcoming fourth season of the acclaimed series Sherlock. He’s also been seen in Star Trek Into Darkness and 12 Years A Slave.
