'Boyhood' wins more awards from Boston, Los Angeles critics

Critics in Boston and in Los Angeles got together on Sunday to name the winners of their awards. Predictably, just as their counterparts in New York had last week, they named Boyhood the best film of the year.

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association, which celebrated their 40th annual awards, gave Boyhood four awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Patricia Arquette won Best Actress and Sandra Adair won Best Editing.

Best Actor went to Tom Hardy for Locke, which was a unique choice since Birdman’s Michael Keaton is considered the frontrunner in that category. J.K. Simmons won Best Supporting actor for Whiplash, while Best Supporting actress went to Ida’s Agata Kulesza.

Wes Anderson won Best Screenplay for The Grand Budapest Hotel and Birdman’s Emmanuel Lubezki won for Best Cinematography. Ida received Best Foreign-Language film and Citenfour won Best Documentary.

On the other side of the country, the Boston Society of Film Critics gave Boyhood five awards. Adair and Linklater also won editing and directing, respectively, while the film’s cast won Best Ensemble.

Simmons also won Best Supporting Actor in Boston. Both societies also gave THe Tale of the Princess Kaguya Best animated film.

Boston critics picked Keaton for Best Actor and Marion Cotillard for Best Actress. Cotillard starred in The Immigrant and Two Days, One Night this year. Emma Stone won Best Supporting actress for Birdman.

Two Days, One Night won Boston’s Foreign Language award and Citizenfour won Best Documentary. Lubezki won Cinematography, while Boston’s screenplay award was a tie between Birdman and Boyhood.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice won Boston’s Best Use of Music award, while it took home Best Music Score in LA.
