Cubs win Jon Lester sweepstakes at 6 years, $155 million

Free agent veteran pitcher Jon Lester promised us he'd make a decision today regarding his future, and that's just what he did as the Chicago Cubs have announced the winning of his services.

John Heyman of CBS Sports has reported that the two sides have come together on a mega six-year deal worth $155 million. There is also a vesting option for a seventh-year worth $15 million.

The lefty veteran was reportedly being courted by at least five different teams: Cubs, Giants, Red Sox, Dodgers and Braves. The Yankees were also rumored to have offered a deal.

For the Cubs, it automatically legitimizes a rotation, and a franchise which was in desperate need of legitimization. The rebuilding process under new leadership has been a tiresome one for Cubs fans, but now that light at the end of the tunnel is finally being realized.

Lester finished the 2014 campaign with a 16-11 record to go along with a 2.46 earned run average and 220 innings in 219.2 innings pitched, notes Baseball Reference. More importantly than the numbers though, Lester is a money pitcher, capable of providing a big-game at a moments notice.

Boston and Chicago were the final two choices for Lester. The storyline surrounding this is his familiarity with each organization. Lester of course has enjoyed most of his big league career with the Red Sox, winning two world championships, until being shipped to Oakland at the trade deadline last season.

Chicago is now run by former Red Sox front-men Theo Epstein, Jed Hoyer and Jason McLeod. Perhaps Epstein is the reason Cubs fans everywhere are enjoying this day so much.

Oh, how fate is quickly turning into reality. Remember how Michael J. Fox reacted in Back to the Future 2 when the Cubs won the 2015 World Series? Well Cubs fans, while prophecies happen to come true very seldom, and you already know this all too well with your history, your time might finally be coming.
