'Ghostbusters' all-female reboot to be 'scarier than the original,' says Paul Feig

Bridesmaids director Paul Feig is hard at work on his all-female reboot of Ghostbusters for Sony and he is vowing to make a film that doesn’t betray the original classic. However, he said in a new interview that he’s planning on pushing the scary envelope a bit further in his new film.

Feig spoke with Empire magazine this week and said that he can see why cynics would think an all-female Ghostbusters team is just a gimmick. “I’m just more interested in the idea of lady Ghostbusters. It’s the way my brain works,” he said.

As Bloody Disgusting notes, Feig said that he does want to take the franchise in a new, scarier direction. He’s working on that with his collaborator, The Heat writer Katie Dippold.

"I want ours to be scarier than the original, to be quite honest,” the director said. “Katie Dippold and I are so focused on wanting to do scary comedy. We don’t want to hold back.”

The film will also be an origin story, sadly, but Feig is really looking forward to introducing audiences to an all-new world and characters.

While there’s still no word on who exactly is going to star in the film, Rebel Wilson joked that she’d do it for free. In addition, leaked Sony emails showed that Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, Melissa McCarthy, Amy Schumer and Lizzy Caplan have all expressed interest in making it.
