Gunshots fired inside Washington hospital, suspect detained

Authorities said that an 18-year-old has been arrested and charged after firing a shotgun inside Sunnyside Community Hospital on Saturday morning.

KIMA noted that Leo Vergara, made a court appearance on Monday and was being held on $100,000 bail for suspicion of assault.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reported that officers responded to calls around 4 a.m. of gunshots being fired inside the facility. A security official, who is commissioned by Sunnyside police, wrestled with Vergara in an effort to disarm him before police arrived.

The weapon discharged, but no one was injured in the incident. However, the guard required stitches for a head wound he sustained while struggling with the suspect, who fled the scene but was arrested a short time later.

Vergara was allegedly armed with a loaded shotgun and demanded to see a law enforcement official when he walked into the hospital’s emergency waiting room.

According to a court affidavit, police said they believe he wanted a cop to fatally shoot him.
