Instagram surpasses Twitter in number of users, now has 300 million

The Kevin Systrom and Mike Kriege-created Instagram app has surpassed Twitter in the amount of users. Facebook is still the largest social media service, though.

While Twitter has 284 million active users, Instagram now has 300 million. The company was launched just four years ago and it was acquired by Facebook in 2012 for $1 billion.

In a blog post, Systrom wrote "Over the past four years, what began as two friends with a dream has grown into a global community that shares more than 70 million photos and videos each day.”

WSJ notes since March, the app has gained 100 million users. Most users come from outside of U.S., with 210 million making up users from other countries.

Users can now expect to see “verified” badges added for celebrities and public companies, just like Twitter has. Instagram users can also expect a decrease in number of followers soon, as they’re working to rid as many spam accounts as possible.
