King Kong prequel 'Skull Island' gets new title, new date and J.K. Simmons

Skull Island, Universal and Legendary’s upcoming King Kong prequel, underwent some major changes over the weekend. Today, it also gained J.K. Simmons.

Announced at the San Diego Comic-Con in July, the film is set to explain life on the mysterious island, where a giant gorilla can live alongside dinosaurs. It was originally scheduled for release on Nov. 4, 2016.

However, Universal must have been nervous that not enough people know that Skull Island will have something to do with a familiar brand like King Kong, so they’ve added Kong’s name to the title. Over the weekend, the Hollywood Reporter noted that the film’s new official title is Kong: Skull Island.

It will also be pushed to Friday, March 10, 2017. That way, it won’t have to compete with Marvel’s Doctor Strange movie. Skull Island will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D.

Tom Hiddleston is still set to star, with Jordan Vogt-Roberts directing. John Gatis and Max Borenstein wrote the script.

Today, THR confirmed that Simmons will join the cast. The actor has earned wide acclaim for his performance in Whiplash with Miles Teller.

In other Universal news, they have scheduled a Chinese director Zhang Yimou’s English-language debut, a film about the Great Wall, for Nov. 23, 2016. The only other film set for release on Thanksgiving Weekend 2016 is Disney’s Moana.
