Mark Wahlberg wants his criminal record cleared so he can join LA police force

Last week, it was revealed that Mark Wahlberg had filed a request to the Massachusetts Board of Pardons in November to have a 1988 felony assault conviction erased from his record. It seemed like a random move, but it turns out that he does have a motive.

Sources for TMZ say that Wahlberg wants to join a police force in the Los Angeles area as a reservist. However, because of the 1988 conviction, he is considered a felon and felon’s can’t carry a gun.

Wahlberg apparently became interested in the duties of a police officer after doing research for movies in which he played a cop, like The Other Guys and The Departed.

As we previously reported, Wahlberg filed his application on Nov. 26 to have his conviction for an April 8, 1988 incident wiped from his record. On that day, Wahlberg beat two men, leaving one partially blind. He later served 45 days in prison.

“I am deeply sorry for the actions that I took on the night of April 8, 1988, as well as for any lasting damage that I may have caused the victims,” he wrote in his application. “Since that time, I have dedicated myself to becoming a better person and citizen so that I can be a role model to my children and others.”

Wahlberg can be seen in Paramount’s The Gambler later this month.
