Patient in Massachusetts tested for Ebola virus

A patient at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston was tested for the Ebola virus on Tuesday.

The Boston Globe reported that health officials have said that the patient is in stable condition and that the disease has not yet been confirmed. The patient was tested for Ebola because they have traveled to an area of West Africa where the virus is most prevalent.

Should the unidentified patient test positive, the Boston Herald noted that Gov. Deval Patrick is confident the hospital is prepared to treat the disease.

“We’re very ready,” Patrick said on Wednesday. “The protocols have been followed, as I understand it, to the letter.”

Patrick reassured Massachusetts residents that they should not jump to any conclusions since at this time there are still no confirmed cases in the state.

Officials said a definitive Ebola diagnosis could take days.

So far, more than 10,000 people have been stricken with the disease since the outbreak began several months ago. To date, over 6,000 of those cases have resulted in death, mostly in the West African nations of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
