Sophia and Jackson still the most popular baby names, Netflix-inspired names see increase

BabyCenter has released their list of most popular baby names for 2014 and it looks like parents were inspired by the actors on their favorite television shows when it came to naming their children.

The top baby name of the year for girls was Sophia and for boys it was Jackson. The top three girls names haven’t changed for three consecutive years, so it’s clear Sophia is a mainstay.

“Jackson has staying power and is not a one-hit wonder, and Sophia is arguably the Jennifer of its generation,” Linda Murray, global editor in chief of BabyCenter said. “It’s clearly entered the baby name hall of fame.”

Although they weren’t in the top 10, names from Netflix’s Orange is the New Black increased in popularity drastically.

Galina increased 67 percent, Nicky went up 35 percent, and Piper – Taylor Schilling’s character - is up 28 percent.

Names from House of Cards are also up – with Frank and Claire going up 19 and 14 percent respectively.

Today.com reports 20 percent of parents admitted to getting ideas for names from their favorite television shows, while 16 percent of parents said they got ideas from actors.

“This is the year of the binge-watching baby name,” said Murray.
