15 arrested in anti-terrorism operation, Belgian prosecutors say

Authorities in Belgium said that they have now detained more than a dozen individuals overnight during the country’s anti-terrorism operation.

The Los Angeles Times noted that federal prosecutor Eric Van Der Sypt said Friday that the 15 people arrested in the raids are believed to be part of a Belgian terrorist cell.

Prosecutors also said that police found AK-47’s, ammunition, explosives, fake documents, cellphones, walkie-talkies, large amounts of cash and law enforcement uniforms in the raids.

As previously reported, news of the latest arrest comes just one day after Belgian authorities killed two suspects during a gun battle in Verviers. Police said that at the time one suspect was apprehended.

The country heightened its terror threat level and on Friday, Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said that he is considering bringing in the country’s army for some added security.

"At present, we have no knowledge of a concrete and specific threat," Michel told a local newspaper. "But we know that zero risk does not exist, either in Belgium or elsewhere."
