80-year-old retiree wins biggest jackpot in New York lottery history, $326 million

An 80-year-old retired principal from New York won the state’s largest jackpot in the state’s lottery history.

Wurtsboro’s Harold Diamond and his wife, Carol, were announced as the winners of the $326 million jackpot. After taxes, they won $130,676,438.

ABC News reports his wife retired in 1994, a year before he did, and had been a teacher for 36 years.

He explained how he found out about winning, saying “I put the ticket in my wallet and forgot about it. I went to play golf the next day and the guys in the clubhouse were talking about the jackpot-winning ticket someone bought at a Valero on Route 302 and I thought, wait a minute – I bought a ticket there last night!”

Diamond said when he saw that all six of his numbers had matched up to his Quick Pick, he went into a “real daze,” adding, “I was in a dither.”

They plan on donating to the community and taking care of their family with the money, although Diamond does admit he doesn’t know how he can possibly have this much money.
“I simply can’t envision that kind of money. It’s very hard to fathom. We feel very blessed,” he said.

WBNG reports he received a giant check on Monday at 11am at the gas station he bought the ticket at.
