Dallas Cowboys interested in acquiring running back Adrian Peterson (Report)

The Dallas Cowboys will not be participating in Super Bowl XLIX on Sunday, but that hasn’t stopped the team from grabbing headlines this week. The latest are regarding the team's future at the running back position.

Most people would think for a team that had the NFL’s leading rusher last season, the position is a solid lock for DeMarco Murray to return to the franchise in 2015. But, he is scheduled to become a free agent, which has the rumor mill spinning and according to Bleacher Report, multiple sources claiming that the team is eyeing another accomplished running back.

"Well I'm talking to multiple sources including one very close to the Cowboys thinking and one very close to Adrian Peterson,” said BR reporter Jason Cole. “The thinking is, Peterson could be a target for the Cowboys this offseason. Despite his high price tag, the thinking is he may be willing to take less money to come back to Texas, where he was born and raised and play for the Cowboys.”

Less money for Peterson may work out better for the Cowboys who reportedly do not want to pay what Murray is expected to command. That would also leave more to get a mega-deal done with Dez Bryant, who appears to be the team’s first priority.

As ESPN noted, it’s no secret that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Peterson have had contact in the past about a situation that could bring them together after his tenure in Minnesota.

There would still be a few obstacles in the way though of making this pairing a reality. Peterson has been one of the best backs for some time. However, the soon to be 30-year-old was out of commission for almost a full season, which makes it difficult for anyone to try and predict how he will perform going forward. Also, throw in that despite the very public child-abuse case, the Minnesota Vikings reportedly want him back.

So we’ll have to stay tuned to see how this plays out.
