French media rallies behind Charlie Hebdo after attacks

The French media is standing behind Charlie Hebdo, the satirical magazine that was targeted in a terrorist attack in Paris on Wednesday. France’s major newspaper Le Monde and two public broadcasters issued a joint statement, offering help to the struggling weekly magazine.

Luc Bronner, Le Monde’s chief editor, posted the letter on Twitter, hours after the attack, reports NPR. In the letter, Le Monde’s parent company and broadcasters Radio France and France Televisions offer Charlie Hebdo equipment and staff to make sure they can continue to publish. The companies also offer other FRench media organizations to join them to “preserve the principles of editorial independence and freedom of thought — principles that are fundamental to our democracy.”

Other French media organizations showed their support by holding a minute of silence. Agence France-Presse posted a picture of its newsroom, where journalists are seen holding up signs that read “Je Suis Charlie.”

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Charlie Hebdo site is back online, but just shows the “Je Suis Charlie” sign.

In the U.S., journalists have also shown their support, while comedians Jon Stewart and Conan O’Brien paid tribute on their shows.

The attack on the magazine's offices left 12 people dead. Police are still searching for two of the gunmen and one gunman has turned himself in.
