George Zimmerman, man acquitted in Trayvon Martin shooting, arrested for assault

George Zimmerman, the man who was acquitted of the shooting death of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin in 2012, has continued to have run-ins with the law. On Friday, he was arrested for aggravated assault with a weapon.

The 31-year-old was arrested in Lake Mary, Florida, a spokesman for the Seminole County Sheriff told The Orlando Sentinel. He was booked at the John E. Polk Correctional Facility last night and is being held without bond. He will make a court appearance Saturday morning.

“The next step in the process is first appearance. At this time, the judge may address bond status,” the sheriff’s office told NBC News.

No further information was immediately available on the arrest.

Zimmerman was in the national headlines in 2013 when a jury did not convict him on second-degree murder in the killing of Martin in 2012. Still, he has found ways to remain in the news for selling a painting on eBay and being arrested on domestic violence charges last year. However, he was not charged in that incident, though, after his girlfriend recanted. He’s also been stopped for speeding.

In September 2014, he told the Orlando Sentinel that he was in debt because of legal fees and was jobless. As USA Today notes, that same month, he was also named in a 911 road rage call.
