Jon Stewart, Conan O’Brien react to Charlie Hebdo tragedy in Paris (Video)

Jon Stewart and Conan O’Brien took time out of their late night shows to pay tribute to the French cartoonists who were killed on Wednesday in a terrorist attack in Paris. They were among the 12 people killed at the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Stewart opened The Daily Show by mentioning the tragedy, and noting how it follows a tough year for anyone.

“Our hearts are with the staff of Charlie Hebdo and their families tonight,” Stewart said. “I know very few people go into comedy, you know, as an act of courage, mainly because it shouldn’t have to be that,” he continued, but said that the people at Charlie Hebdo had it.

He later added, “Our goal tonight is not to make sense of this, because there is no sense to be made of this. Our goal, as it always is, is to keep going.”

On TBS’ Conan, O’Brien said that it was a tragedy that really hit home for anyone who mocks politicians and religious figures.

“In this country, we just take it for granted that it’s our right to poke fun at the untouchable or the sacred. But today’s tragedy in Paris reminds us - very viscerally - that it’s a right that some people are forced inexplicably to die for.”

On Wednesday, gunmen stormed the offices of Charlie Hebdo, which is known for political cartoons that mock Islam, and killed 12 people, including the magazine’s editor, Stephanie Charbonnier.
