One dead, one injured after Ohio overpass collapses

One person was killed and another was injured after an overpass north of downtown Cincinnati collapsed Monday evening.

The Associated Press reported that demolition was underway around 10:30 p.m. on Interstate 75 when the overpass collapsed onto the highway, killing a construction worker and injuring a tractor-trailer driver.

The Cincinnati Enquirer noted that the truck driver sustained only minor injuries.

"I can tell you that the big rig driver -- the semi driver is very lucky," said Cincinnati Police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell. "In a matter of seconds his fate would have probably been different."

Authorities have not released the name of the deceased victim, but said he was buried under concrete and his body was pulled from the rubble around 3 a.m. local time.

The overpass was not believed to have had any structural damage.

The Liberty Township office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration will be investigating the incident.

Commuters will have to find alternate routes and plan ahead as the area around the overpass will be closed for days to come.
