Palestinian man wounds 11 in bus stabbing, Israeli police say

Israeli authorities have said that a Palestinian man stabbed and wounded several people aboard a commuter bus in Tel Aviv Wednesday morning.

The Times of Israel noted that the stabbing took place during the morning rush hour commute and the assailant injured at least 11 people before he was shot in the leg and arrested.

Passengers were riding the number 40 bus en route to Tel Aviv University around 7:30 a.m. when the suspect allegedly stabbed the driver first and then others at the Maariv junction.

Micky Rosenfeld, spokesman for the Israeli police, called the incident a “terrorist attack.”

The Associated Press reported that the suspect in custody is Hamza Mohammed Matroukh, 23, a West Bank man believed to have been in Israel illegally.

Rosenfeld said that he allegedly confessed to the stabbing and is still undergoing questioning at this time.

Of the injured, three remain hospitalized and in critical condition.

This is the first alleged Palestinian attack to have occurred in the Israeli capital in the past two months and is a reminder of the growing tensions in the region.
