Penn State approves NCAA deal to restore 112 vacated wins

Penn State has approved a deal by the NCAA to restore all 111 of the late coach Joe Paterno’s wins and one win under defensive coach Tom Bradley that were previously vacated.

WPVI reported that the governing body of college athletics announced on Friday the proposal agreement ahead of a scheduled litigation trial and the university has approved it.

Board members of the NCAA said that the deal will no longer delay funds that will be directed to sex abuse victims.

"While others will focus on the return of wins, our top priority is on protecting, educating and nurturing young people," said Harris Pastides, University of South Carolina president and member of the NCAA board.

The school wins were vacated after the university was rocked by child-abuse charges against former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. The former coach served under Paterno from 1969 to 1999. In 2011, he was arrested on several counts of sexual abuse with young boys from 1994 to 2009. He was found guilty in 2012 and essentially given a life sentence.

In the aftermath of the charges and findings in the Freech report, the school was forced to vacate the wins and Paterno was dismissed. He died in January of 2012 at the age of 85.

Restoring the wins will once again make him the winningest coach in Division I college football history bringing the total back from 298 to 409.
