Scarlett Johansson to star in DreamWorks action movie 'Ghost in the Shell'

Scarlett Johansson, who had a stellar 2014 with Under the Skin and Lucy, has signed on for another thriller. She will star in DreamWorks’ Ghost in the Shell, which will be directed by Snow White and the Huntsman’s Rupert Sanders.

Margot Robbie was in talks to do the movie back in September, but later dropped out. (She’s since moved on to Suicide Squad.) Deadline reports that Robbie left in October and Johansson entered the picture. She was offered $10 million.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter confirms that she took the deal.

Ghost in the Shell will be written by Bill Wheeler. The Japanese manga by Masamune Shirow centered on a Japanese National Public Safety group investigating tech crimes. Mark Sourian, a former DreamWorks executive, had been overseeing the film while there and will remain an executive producer.

Steven Paul, Avi Arad and Ari Arad are producing.

Johansson’s next film is Avengers: Age of Ultron. She earned some positive critical response for Under the Skin and proved that she can headline a solo action blockbuster with Lucy.
