'Star Wars': Bob Iger says Episodes VIII and IX will be out in 2017 and 2019

Remember when we had to wait three years for a new Star Wars movie? Disney is going to cut that wait down when it finally starts its main trilogy with The Force Awakens. Disney CEO Bob Iger reportedly said yesterday that Episode VIII and Episode IX will hit theaters in 2017 and 2019, respectively.

Iger reportedly made the statement at a shareholders meeting, CinemaBlend notes. They were posted by Get Your Geek On.

He said that the Force Unleashed is “only the beginning of a new era of exceptional Star Wars storytelling,” adding that the standalone movies will be based on “these characters.”

That’s lead some to assume that Iger means that the spinoffs from Gareth Edwards and Josh Trank will actually be about the new Force Awakens characters, not Original Trilogy ones.

Then, he said that Episode VIII will hit theaters in 2017, with IX opening in 2019. These new movies will be overseen by Looper’s Rian Johnson, who is directing VIII and writing IX.

It’s pretty clear that Iger wants a Star Wars movie every year, so it’s actually no surprise that he’d cut down on the time between movies. When the Original Trilogy was coming out, there were three years between each film and George Lucas also had us wait three years between the Prequels.

Disney and Lucasfilm haven’t released a statement on Iger’s comments yet.
