DeAngelo Williams says Panthers did not attend his mother’s funeral

Former Carolina Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams said in an interview that he was told he will released from the team and will become a free agent. He also revealed that he was very “upset” with the Panthers last May when his mother died of breast cancer and no one from the organization went to her funeral.

Williams sat down with WBTV for an exclusive interview and said that despite what is being reported about “talks,” he was already told by management that he is being released.

"We sat down and he told me 'The fact of the matter is we're going to have to release you'," Williams said. "I said you know, 'Why?' and he said, 'because we don't run the ball enough. Just like you said back before the season started, we don't run the ball enough to keep you and both [Jonathan Stewart], so we're going to release you'."

Something even more shocking out of the interview is that the running back said after he informed the team of his mother’s death, only one other player showed up at her funeral. Williams said that the owner was not there, the general manager was not there and the coaches were not there. He said while other players did text and call him, the only person from the team who actually attended the funeral was Greg Hardy.

The Panthers have not yet announced his release. League sources have told ESPN that under the collective bargaining agreement, the team needs to wait until March in order to designate him as a post-June 1 cut.

Williams, 31, was drafted in 2006 and spent his entire career in Carolina. He is the franchise’s all-time leading rusher.
