NBC considers 'Law & Order' limited series reboot

NBC is so bad at coming up with new ideas that the peacock is considering another limited series reboot. With Heroes Reborn already in the works, get ready for a new incarnation of Law & Order.

Sources for Deadline said that the project isn’t currently in development, but the idea has been there for awhile. The site reports that several actors from the early years of the network’s longest-running show have already been approached, including Chris Noth. Sam Waterston, who joined in season 5 and stayed through to the end, has also been approached.

The Law & Order reboot would run 10 episodes, but it’s not clear if this would be a single case or would follow the show’s familiar format. If the limited series does happen, it could finally give fans closure after the show’s abrupt cancellation in May 2010. It is tied with Gunsmoke as the longest-running primetime drama in TV history with 20 seasons.

While Law & Order is over, NBC is still in business with the show’s executive producer, Dick Wolf. Law & Order: SVU was just renewed for a 17th season and both Chicago Fire and Chicago PD will return in the fall. On top of that, a Chicago Med spin-off is also being considered.

NBC isn’t the only network using limited series as a way to revive beloved shows. Fox had success with a 24 limited series. Showtime is also reviving CBS’ Twin Peaks and Netflix brought back Arrested Development.
