Nigerian soldiers kill 300 Boko Haram militants, army says

The Nigerian army announced Wednesday that its soldiers have killed around 300 Boko Haram militants.

Reuters reported that defense spokesman Chris Olukolade said that in addition, a number of fighters from the extremist group have been captured and the army has taken back 11 towns and villages.

"Weapons and equipment were also captured and some destroyed," Olukolade said in a statement. "However, two soldiers lost their lives while 10 others were wounded."

Nigeria’s confirmation has not been verified at this time.

The AFP noted that officials said that just over the Nigerian border in Niger, more than two dozen people were killed when an identified plane dropped bombs there.

Responsibility for that attack has not yet been claimed.

Since 2009, Boko Haram has wreaked havoc and carried out countless acts of violence in Nigeria. It is also the same group that is responsible for kidnapping of more than 200 schoolgirls last April in Chibok, Borno state. The group’s name means Western education is sinful.
