Roman Polanski shows up in Polish court on extradition request, nothing comes of it

Roman Polanski appeared in a court in Poland for his 37-year-old sex with a minor case but he was not extradited.

The 81-year-old filmmaker was once again a free man, as the judge set another court date for April.

As Washington Post notes, there have been multiple attempts at extradition on behalf of Britain, France, Israel, Canada, Thailand and Switzerland to no avail.

Polanski fled the U.S. after pleading guilty to unlawful intercourse with a minor after having sex with a 13-year-old girl named Samantha Geimer in 1977.

Geimer has asked that the charges against Polanski be dropped. She has said, “Polanski went to jail for 42 days. I never asked anyone to put him in jail for a day and in the scheme of things, from what I have been told, in 1977, 42 days would have been about average.”

“However, I think that was a lot, plus he was arrested again and went to jail for months again -- that's way in excess of anything he deserved,” she added, CNN reports.

As we previously reported, even if the judge approves the extradition request in April, a justice minister will still have to approve it.
