Surfer dies after losing legs in shark attack

A man was fatally attacked by a shark off Australia's New South Wales coast at Shelly Beach on Monday.

ABC reported that the victim is surfer and Japanese national Tadashi Nakahara.

Detective Inspector Cameron Lindsay said the 41-year-old man was surfing with a group when the attack occurred.

"We believe he was surfing with up to four men, two were very close to him, they rendered assistance and brought him to shore," Lindsay said.
Nakahara lost both of his legs in the attack and after being pulled to safety, he eventually died from the loss of blood.

BBC News noted that there have been several attacks shark attacks in Australia over the past several months. Nakahara’s attack comes just one day after a 35-year man was attacked by a shark off Seven Mile Beach near Byron Bay, not far from Shelly Beach. That man suffered cuts and wounds to his back, but was able to drive himself to a hospital and is listed in stable condition. Last September, however, also near Byron Bay, a 50-year-old man was not so lucky and died after he was attacked.

The beach where Nakahara was attacked has been closed following the incident and police searched the water for the predator as scientists try to determine what type of shark was responsible.
