'Teletubbies' creator says she won't watch remake

All is not right in the home of the Teletubbies. While the sun may still be smiling, the creator of the U.K. series says she will not be watching the new episodes.

Creator Anne Wood spoke with The Radio Times this week and said she was “sad” to have to sell the rights to the show. She said that the new episodes, which will air on the BBC’s children’s network CBeebies, have “nothing to do with me.”

She also said that she will not be watching the new shows.

“I couldn’t bring myself to,” Wood said. “I mean I have nothing against them, it might be brilliant. They tell me they've got the best producer possible on it, so that's a good sign.”

Still, she said it would be like watching her own children being remade by someone else. “They bought it and I can't do anything about that,” she said.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series was owned by Ragdoll, a studio owned by BBC Worldwide and an investor group. However, in 2013, DHX Media, a Canadian company, bought Ragdoll.

Wood was also asked about the growing U.K. trend of remaking old children’s shows, rather than creating something new. In addition to Teletubbies, Danger Mouse and Thunderbirds are also being remade.

“I’m a bit sad,” Wood said. “It comes down to the times we’re in. People feel safer remaking hits of the past rather than investing in something new.”

Teletubbiesnew series will feature 60 episodes.
