Top 10 #RuinAn80sSong titles

There’s always a new trend in social media. Recently #RuinAn80sSong has been trending on Twitter, and we just have to share.

Even if you haven’t been around long enough to remember the music of the ‘80s, I’m sure you still know a few of the hits. Despite the desires of many, they just won’t die out. One example is Eye of the Tiger, introduced to this generation via Sponge Bob’s performance at the Bubble Bowl. Many others have annoyingly made their way into TV commercials.

The idea behind #RuinAn80sSong is to take a well know song from the ‘80s and change the title lyrics to make them funny, sarcastic, or disturbing, in essence ruining the song. Some of the greats referenced here include Bon Jovi’s Livin’ on a Prayer, Soft Cell’s Tainted Love, and music by the likes of Cyndi Lauper, Prince, and AC/DC. For those of you who really loved the ‘80s and treasure its music, or if you really don’t know what songs are being referenced, we’ve included videos of the original hits.

If you have a favorite ‘80s spoof that you’d like to share, include it in the comments below, and don’t forget to hashtag it #RuinAn80sSong!

Spock

For most of us growing up in the ‘80s included watching the original Star Trek in syndication. It also included rocking out to heavy metal bands like AC/DC. This #RuinAn80sSong title nicely combines both.

Livin’ in a trailer

Bon Jovi has a knack for writing songs that become “ear worms.” You just can’t get it out of your head. One such song is Livin’ on a Prayer. In the song, the story of two young lovers trying to make ends meet is shared. That’s part of what makes this #RuinAn80sSong title so funny.

I wonder if this is Jon Bon Jovi’s idea of a trailer?

I just gotta say, I love the hair!

Yo Gabba Gabba

Anyone who has watched the kids show Yo Gabba Gabba knows that someone was having a whole lotta some kinda fun when they created it. So, to suggest that the characters, the “Gabbas” just want to have fun seems very apropos.

McGyver

Here’s another creative combination of TV show and pop song: take McGyver, one of the coolest secret agents ever and give him Survivor’s Eye of the Tiger for background music and you’ve got Eye of McGyver!

Lock the taskbar

Modern technology can be frustrating sometimes, such as when you inadvertently move your taskbar. Locking it will keep it in place. When you finally get that pesky taskbar to stay where you want it, you’ll be so happy, you’ll want a catchy tune to sing in victory. How about Rock the Casbah, or in this case Lock the Taskbah?

Tainted Glove

There’s no way you made it through the ‘90s without hearing about the O.J. Simpson trial, in which he was accused of murdering his ex-wife, but just in case you did, here’s the gist: one of the clues found at the scene of the crime was one of a pair of gloves covered in blood. Despite the fact that the other glove was found in his house, Simpson’s defense lawyer argued that it couldn’t be Simpson’s because it was not his size. Soon, the phrase “If the glove fits” became a nationwide motto. I suppose you could say the glove was tainted with blood the way Simpson’s love for his ex-wife was supposedly tainted with jealousy.

99 Red Baboons

This is just silly, which is what makes it so great. 99 Red Balloons, or 99 Luftballons as is was originally titled in German, was an anti-war song that plays on the fears of bordering nations that the shooting of 99 balloons is a display of force that could warrant a declaration of war. It seems preposterous, but is poignant in getting its purpose across. The English version does not translate exactly, but was still widely popular. It may seem insulting to compare the anti-war balloons to the red butts of baboons, but in a way, wouldn’t that be just as ridiculous a reason to declare war?

Mime after mime

I don’t know about you, but I can just picture the mimes outside of the Louve putting a show on to the tune of Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time.

Take my meth away

Before you flip out, think about Walter White from Breaking Bad. Now, think about Top Gun. “What’s the connection?” you ask. Well, it’s Boston’s hit single Take My Breath Away. I’m sure Walter White would take your breath away if you took his meth!

Purple Stain

Prince. Enough said. As mentioned in the beginning, many of our beloved ‘80s songs have been commandeered by advertising agencies and used to catch our attention, even if it’s just out of aggravation. I haven’t seen this aired yet, but it wouldn’t surprise me if Tide did a commercial about how effective they are at getting out stains, even purple ones.

This video is from the movie by the same title. Be patient, it takes about one minute before the song actually starts.
