USC shooting was apparent murder-suicide, police say

Authorities in South Carolina have said that two people are dead following Thursday’s on-campus shooting which they believe was an apparent murder-suicide.

WLTX reported that the shooting occurred around 1 p.m. in the University of South Carolina's Arnold School of Public Health building where two people were found dead.

The incident prompted a lockdown and students received alerts via the school’s emergency system and through Twitter.

The Associated Press noted that while few details about the shooting have been released, police let students, faculty and staff know that there was no danger at any time to the public.

There was "no active shooter situation,” said State Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry during a brief news conference.

"Every indication we have seen so far it appears to be a very isolated incident — a murder-suicide," he added.

Some students who were inside the building at the time told police that they did not hear any gunshots and thought the sirens were for a fire drill.

The lockdown has since been lifted and the shooting remains under investigation.
