7 children killed by Brooklyn house fire

Tragic news came out of Brooklyn on Saturday that seven children were killed by a fire at their Brooklyn home.

Newsday reported that a call about the blaze was made around 12:30 a.m. When fire officials arrived a few minutes later, the two-story home was engulfed in flames. It took more than 100 firefighters to contain it.

The children killed were all members of the same family, authorities said.

A 45-year-old woman, believed to be their mother, escaped with her 14-year-old daughter and were transported to a nearby hospital. However, one 8-year-old girl died at the scene and her four brothers ages 5, 6, 7 and 11, and two sisters aged 12 and 15, later died at three different hospitals.

The children’s father was reportedly away on business.

“It’s a tragedy for this family, it’s a tragedy for this community, it’s a tragedy for our city,” said Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro. He added that it was “the largest tragedy by fire” the city has experienced in nearly a decade.

The New York Times noted that the last fire to killed more people was back in 2007, when nine children and their mother were killed in a blaze in the Bronx borough.

The FDNY has said that the Brooklyn fire appears to have been started by a hot plate in the kitchen.
