Christian Yelich signs with Marlins

After signing outfielder Giancarlo Stanton to a 13-year, $325 million deal over the winter, the Miami Marlins have reached a deal with another outfielder. Outfielder Christian Yelich signed with the Marlins on Wednesday.

The Marlins had been talking with Yelich about a long-term contract since late last year. Yelich agreed to a seven-year deal that is worth about $50 million, according to the Miami Herald. There is a team option for an eighth year. Stanton’s deal is the largest contract in Marlins history and the largest ever given to an athlete in North America. Former Marlins third baseman Mike Lowell first reported the deal on Twitter.

"He's very mature for his age," Marlinsmanager Mike Redmond said. "It's amazing when you watch him play and watch his at-bats, and his approach, how professional they are at such a young age. He's hungry, and that's what you want. You want young guys to come to the big leagues, and they aren't satisfied with one good year. They want to be better, and that's how you build championship teams, is to have young players that are hungry and want to win, and will do whatever they can to help the ballclub."

Yelich was a first-round pick for the Marlins in 2010. He has become one of the top young players and hitters for the Marlins and in majors. Last year he hit .284 with nine homeruns and 54 RBIs, according to ESPN. He also won the Gold Glove last year.

Yelich joins a Marlins outfield that includes Stanton and Marcell Ozuna. All of the Marlins outfielders are signed through at least the 2021 season.
