Colt McCoy re-signs with Redskins

Free-agent quarterback Colt McCoy re-signed with the Washington Redskins on Tuesday.

According to NFL.com, McCoy signed a one-year contract. Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. There weren’t a lot of teams that were in the market for a quarterback. The best option for McCoy was to stay with Washington.

McCoy was a third-round pick in the 2010 draft. He spent his first three seasons with the Cleveland Browns. After that he played for one year with the San Francisco 49ers. Last year he signed with Washington to be their number three quarterback. He started four games last year and came off the bench in a fifth. He started three more games before suffering a season-ending neck injury. McCoy completed 91 of 128 passes for 1,057 yards, four touchdowns, and had three interceptions last year, according to ESPN. He has 25 career starts and a career passer rating of 78.2.

The deal with McCoy means that Washington will have the same quarterback situation as they did last year. McCoy, Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins are all returning to Washington. Griffin has been named the starter by coach Jay Gruden. However he doesn’t have a lock on the position.

McCoy is the second Washington unrestricted free agent to re-sign with the team, tight end Niles Paul is the other. Washington has lost three players, linebacker Brian Orakpo, wide receiver Leonard Hankerson, and running back Roy Helu.
