Director Sam Taylor-Johnson has quit 'Fifty Shades of Grey' franchise

Fifty Shades of Grey director, Sam Taylor-Johnson, has quit the franchise and will not be returning to direct its sequels, Fifty Shades Darker or Fifty Shades Freed.

While the film’s stars, Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan, will be back, there hasn’t been any talk about a replacement for Taylor-Johnson just yet.

“Directing Fifty Shades Of Grey has been an intense and incredible journey for which I am hugely grateful. I have Universal to thank for that. I forged close and lasting relationships with the cast, producers and crew and most especially, with Dakota and Jamie,” she told Deadline in a statement.

“While I will not be returning to direct the sequels, I wish nothing but success to whosoever takes on the exciting challenges of films two and three,” she added.

There were reports of Taylor-Johnson clashing with the author of the trilogy, E.L. James. James has even been in negotiations to write the script for the second film and has been pushing for more creative control.

Taylor-Johnson even admitted they fought over the film’s sex scenes, saying “It was difficult, I’m not going to lie. We definitely fought, but they were creative fights, and we would resolve them.”
