Emergency responders recall hearing mystery voice before they rescued toddler

The emergency responders that saved the child from a river in Spanish Fork, Utah over the weekend have all said that they heard a mystery voice cry for help during the rescue.

Good Morning America noted that the five men responsible for rescuing the child said they actually heard someone ask for help before they knew there was a baby in the car.

"Help me," Spanish Fork Police officer Lt. Matt Johnson recalled hearing an adult voice say.

The men said that they even answered the voice to assure whoever was asking them for assistance that they were going to be saved. However, when they got a look inside the vehicle there was only one deceased female and one unconscious child.

The rescuers were stumped by this as there were some people nearby but they too stated that the voice came from inside the car.

The possibility that the voice could have come from the mother before she died is not at all likely.

"Due to the trauma she sustained, we suspect she was deceased upon impact,” said Johnson. “I don’t believe she survived the impact of the car crash. There was massive trauma.”

As previously reported, 18-month-old Lily Groesbeck was found after 14 hours in the vehicle. She survived the accident in frigid temperatures, while hanging upside down in her car seat with nothing to eat or drink.

Police believe her mother, Lynn Groesbeck, 25, hit a cement barrier before careening down an embankment.

The toddler has since been recovering and is in stable condition.
