Harmonix to release 'Rock Band 4' for Playstation 4, XBox One

Rock Band is making a comeback. Five years after the release of Rock Band 3, Harmonix is finally going to give video game rockers Rock Band 4 this year.

The developer announced today that the game will be out later this year for both XBox One and Playstation 4. In addition, Harmonix said that the game will support previously purchased downloaded tracks on the next gen consoles.

A new game also means new hardware, so you will still have to buy new guitar and drum controllers. An exclusive Penny Arcade-themed guitar is going to be available with pre-orders at PAX East in Boston this weekend.

Harmonix couldn’t say how many of the tracks from Playstation 3 and XBox 360 games will make the transfer, but they are hoping to have as many as possible available in the new game. The developer did promise that there would be hundreds of songs available when the game launches.

“With Rock Band 4, we’re doubling down on the energy and excitement of playing music live with your friends,” Harmonix CEO Steve Janiak said in a statement. “Focusing on the core experience that our fans have told us they love allows us to evolve established gameplay in meaningful ways that we can’t wait to share with everyone later this year.”

Harmonix Product Manager David Sussman told Entertainment Weekly that they hope to make Rock Band 4 the only music game anyone will ever need from now on. Rather than release a Rock Band 5 or 6 in the future, the developer wants to continue building on Rock Band 4.
