Houthi militants demand surrender of Yemen president

Houthi militants demanded Wednesday that Yemen President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi surrender.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Houthi fighters, who control Yemen’s capital city, have demanded the president surrender and offered a reward for his capture.

Reuters noted that security sources have said that Houthi forces attacked an airbase near Aden after the embattled president reportedly fled his home there and moved to an undisclosed location. The information was announced on the Houthis’ al-Masira television station.

Senior airport official Ameen Juman said that in addition to overrunning Al Anad, Houthi militants have also seized the city’s central bank headquarters.

The 69-year-old Hadi has been Yemen’s president for the past three years, before that he served as the vice president from 1994 to 2012. Forces loyal to him have been trying to push the Houthis back prompting intense battles within the country.

Yemeni Foreign Minister Riyadh Yaseen asked for Gulf Arab military intervention to stop the Houthis. Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal then said that the Gulf Arab states would take steps to back Hadi.

The last of the U.S. troops were evacuated from Yemen on Saturday.
