India bans documentary of convicted gang-rapist blaming victim

India has decided it will not air a documentary by a British filmmaker in which a convicted gang-rapist blames the victim for the rape and murder.

The New York Times noted that on Wednesday, Indian home minister Rajnath Singh announced to Parliament that the film will not air in the country.

He stated that India’s government will “not allow any organization to leverage such an incident and use it for commercial purpose.”

As previously reported, in the documentary titled India’s Daughter, Mukesh Singh spoke about the brutal rape and murder of an Indian student that he took part in.

The student was traveling with a male friend when she and her companion were picked up on a bus driven by the convicted rapist in 2012. The 23-year was gang raped by several men aboard and then penetrated with foreign objects. She later died while at a hospital.

During the documentary, Singh actually blamed the victim for what happened saying that she should have just let the rape go on instead of trying to fight back. He also said that the rape was to teach her a lesson.

"A girl is far more responsible for rape than a boy," Singh said. "A decent girl won't roam around at 9 o'clock at night ... Housework and housekeeping is for girls, not roaming in discos and bars at night doing wrong things, wearing wrong clothes."

He, along with the other men involved, were convicted of the crime and are set to be executed by hanging.
