'Jane The Virgin' recap- 'Chapter Sixteen'

Jane The Virgin opened with young Jane watching her favorite dance, the Salsa, during an event called Calle Ocho, which is an event the women in her family go to every year. She has a fantasy of the salsa dancers being in love, until she spots the woman passionately kissing the churro guy behind a food truck. Alba and Xiomara gave her a story to believe in as the voiceover told the audience that it only led to a crack forming in the fantasy.

In the present day, Jane is trying to talk to Rafael about a hospital tour she wants to take. However, he keeps talking on his phone and ignoring her, so she texts him to get him to pay attention to her. He is trying to get a band to come to the Marbella since the event for Calle Ocho is hosting some big names as well. But he tries to focus on her as they discuss when the hospital tour is taking place. She asks if he is okay since he has been distracted, but he plays it off as being busy with work, so she decides to believe him.

Back at the house, Xiomara and Rogelio are looking at a house and making a final decision. Rogelio agrees it is the one after making sure it is a large square footage size than his rival’s. He asks how Alba took the news of the move and we see that Alba took it surprisingly well. Rogelio thinks it is also because she likes him so much, but his mood sours when he sees he is losing followers on Twitter because people don’t think he is believable as a detective. They also post a gif of him holding his gun incorrectly, which Jane notices as she walks in.

Jane asks her mom for a grilled cheese sandwich, but Xiomara likes hers better. She talks about moving out and Jane tells her she is “happy…ish” but Xiomara assures her that things will still be the same between the two of them. The conversation moves to what happened with Rafael and Jane says she wishes things could be different, like they were when they first got together. Xiomara mentions Rafael was just hurt because of her rejecting his proposal and things would get better. Jane mentions trying to work on her writing, but when she sits down later to write, she comes down with a case of writer’s block.

Petra comes to tell Rafael that she found an in to get a singer named David Bisbal to the hotel. She followed Rogelio on Twitter and he posted a photo of himself with the singer. Rafael is suspicious of her motives, but she assures him that she is just trying to bring money and people into the hotel.

Downstairs, Jane sees Michael and they exchange an awkward hello before he gives her a flyer for a writer’s workshop that he got from the woman at the food truck. A writer both she and Jane liked leads it, so he offered to give it to her. Jane is excited because she had wanted to go to a writer’s workshop to help with her writing. Hearing someone make a sound, Michael turns to see a forlorn Rogelio, who mentions the gif. Michael has seen it too and Jane hits his arm to get him to be quiet. When Michael brings up being a detective, Rogelio asks to shadow Michael on his job. Michael agrees, but reminds him that he can’t have a weapon or pretend he is a real officer. Rogelio leaves excitedly and Jane reminds Michael that he agreed.
At the writer’s workshop, Jane arrives and is looking forward to the event since author Amanda Elaine is leading it. As Amanda reads, another newcomer joins the group and Amanda talks about using a line to pull the reader in (or in their words, “thrust”). The narrator gives an example talking about how one of the people in the group would end up changing Jane’s life.

Up in a hotel room, Michael sits with Aaron, who he had been about to meet before he ran into Jane earlier. Aaron wants to give Michael the disk he had taken out of his mother’s pendant since Roman had told him about it containing something about insurance but he needs Michael’s help with getting it decrypted.. Michael thanks him and they both exchange a greeting of goodbye.

Meanwhile, Jane’s group is going well until she finds out from the other new girl that when they say something about each other’s writings, they are supposed to say nice things. But Jane didn’t know about the “compliment cards” since the information was on the back of the flyer. Jane tries to get the cards from Wendy, who wrote a deeply personal story, and Jane had talked about not being able to feel the love between the two characters in her story. Wendy bursts into tears, much to Jane’s horror, and she tries to apologize as the rest of the group consoles the sobbing woman.

After the writer’s group, Amanda talks to Jane and scolds her about tearing Wendy down. Jane apologizes once more and mentions they used to critique each other in her creative writing classes. She cites an example of making mistakes from Amanda’s book and asks for another chance.

Meanwhile, Rogelio goes to see Rafael, who had asked him to come down so he could ask about getting David Bisbal to the hotel. However, Rogelio is not happy that Rafael asked Jane for her hand in marriage without talking to him first, even though Rogelio technically did not know Jane that long after Rafael knew her. Rafael apologizes just as Jane arrives. Rogelio tells her that they have gotten past their issues and that he will get David to the hotel before telling Rafael to talk to him first before proposing again. This surprises Jane and she asks Rafael if they are okay. But when she brings up the proposal again, he gets exasperated and upset, not wanting to talk about it.

Later on, Jane tries to go back to her writing to figure things out. She decides to write an apology letter to Wendy in order to make amends. As she is writing, her mom comes in to give her a skirt, but Jane goes to return it. She sees her mom sorting through clothes and discovers some items that belong to her. Alba comes in and is confused about what is going on. It is then Xiomara finds out that her mom didn’t take her seriously about the move and Alba tells her to call the whole thing off. As Xiomara and Alba begin to argue, Jane follows to try and mediate. However, Alba thinks that the relationship will be ruined now and Xiomara is upset that her mom isn’t listening. They both go to their respective rooms, leaving Jane frustrated.

The next morning, Jane gets dressed up for the day as she texts Rafael to make sure they are on for lunch. Then, she reminds her mom and grandma about Calle Ocho before going to see Wendy. She apologizes once again and Wendy tells her that she only cried because the relationship in her story was based off her marriage. She doesn’t feel she can find the romance again and the writer’s group insists that love can always come back. Jane offers to get a suite at the Marbella and Wendy is excited, leaving Jane relieved at solving one problem.

Meanwhile, Petra and Rafael get ready for David Bisbal’s arrival. When he comes, David tells Rafael he wants to go to Calle Ocho first before coming back to the hotel. When he walks away, one of the assistant’s orders Rafael and Petra to take care of David’s dog, much to their surprise. After taking the dog, they are given a list of his schedule. Rafael tries to give the dog to Petra, but she doesn’t like dogs and they finally decide they will have to share.

Jane gets an offer from Amanda to read her work at the next workshop, but Jane isn’t sure, especially since she has writer’s block. Amanda gives her advice and tells her that the problem could be found farther in the back of her story.

Nadine tells Michael the only thing on the flash drive was the name of someone called Tony Vaughn. Rogelio tries to listen in until Michael tells him to step back. They are not sure Vaughn is in town since he’s been off the grid, so they decide to check his mother’s and girlfriend’s house. Nadine takes the girlfriend while Michael and Rogelio go to the mother’s.

As this is happening, Petra and Rafael deal with the dog barking (Diablo is starving, according to the text on the screen) and neither knows what to do. Petra thinks he could be hungry and then Rafael gets a message that he needs to deal with security, so Petra takes the dog. Rafael stops her to make sure she won’t kill him, much to the dog and Petra’s dismay.

Rafael texts Jane that he is running late as she gets ready to make a romantic date, complete with his favorite song “Livin’ On A Prayer.” However, as she dances, she turns to see Petra with the dog. Petra apologizes and tells Jane that she had to get the dog bag before leaving.

In Michael’s car, the two have been sitting outside the mother’s house for hours. Rogelio is getting bored, much to Michael’s annoyance, and he asks what they are supposed to do to pass the time. Michael mentions doing impressions and Rogelio wants to see them. Michael does a couple, one being Ace Ventura from Pet Detective. Michael asks if Jane is happy and then Rogelio ends up telling Michael about the proposal. Before Michael can say anything, they spot Vaughn and make their move.

Rafael arrives at the hotel to see Jane is there, not having gotten his text. They begin to talk about their issues, with Rafael still being upset and mad. Jane fires back and tells him she is also mad because he asked her to marry him way too early into their relationship. She also tells him that if she had asked anyone who knew her beforehand, he never would have asked, and she has been beating herself up for having to say no and hurting him. Jane tells him that it’s not her fault and after getting it out of her system, she doesn’t feel blocked anymore. Jane leaves while Rafael sits on the couch.

Michael and Rogelio make their way into the event where Calle Ocho is as they pursue Vaughn. As Michael goes one way, we see Jane watching the dancers with her mom, but Alba is not there. They bump into Andie, the new girl from the workshop and she tells Jane she reminisces about her ex-boyfriend there. After they leave, we see Rogelio take selfies with fans. He happens to spot Vaughn at the same time as Michael and the police arrive. In the confusion with the girls trying to take pictures of Rogelio, the police are able to apprehend Vaughn.

Petra talks to Rafael as the dog barks on the bed while a maid opens the door. Petra can tell Rafael is distracted and is surprised when he brings up proposing to her early in their relationship. She tells him that while it had happened quickly, she also understood it was because he wanted to have a family. When they realize it is quiet, they turn to see the door is open and the dog got out. They find him in the hall, but he escapes by running into an elevator.

Rogelio and Michael are celebrating their success and Xiomara tells them to “get a room” as they wait for David to take the stage. Xiomara asks if she is waiting for Rafael, but Jane claims she isn’t as she sees Wendy kissing her husband. As the concert begins, Jane has a fantasy of dancing a romantic salsa with Rafael while watching Wendy and her husband, Rogelio and Michael, and her mother and Alba also enjoying themselves. However, it turns out to just be a fantasy.

Rafael is on the phone trying to find the dog when Petra comes in holding him. She had found him in the service elevator. The assistant from before picks up the dog and reveals that she is his owner and figured they would take care of Diabo thinking he was David’s. When she leaves, Rafael tells Petra she really does know him and that it might help with Jane.

Downstairs, Michael is on the phone and finds out that while Vaughn didn’t kill Roman, he could be connected to Rose, aka Sin Rostro. After getting off the phone, he spots Andie, who, surprise, is his ex-girlfriend. It has apparently been three years since they have seen each other.

Alba opens up Xiomara’s door to see the bedroom is empty and she closes it without a word. She ignores her daughter as she comes down the hall.

Jane is writing on her laptop when Rafael comes in. He sees her writer’s block is gone and she tells him about the advice and he mentions that he wanted to hold onto having a family so she wouldn’t leave. Jane assures him she is not going anywhere and he talks about not ever looking for someone and when questioned, he tells her it is his mother. He had trusted his dad’s story about his mom not wanting to be found and Jane talks about her own story about not knowing her father. She encourages to try and look for her. Up in the room, they get ready to do the search and Rafael types in Elena DiNola as the narrator talks about not doing a search for things “you are not prepared to find.”
