Jussie Smollett says 'Empire' role is 'feeding my soul,' he does get why people are interested in his sexuality

Jussie Smollett thinks going public with being gay was a much bigger a deal for everyone else than it was for himself, simply because he doesn’t see it as coming out of the closet.

Smollett’s character’s sexuality is a big storyline on his hit Fox show Empire, and though he never publicly talked about his own sexuality, his co-star Malik Yoba did.

Fans took to Twitter after an interview Yoba did confirming Smollett is gay, saying he was “outed," which prompted Smollett to confirm it during a recent appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

He now tells Variety, “It was a bigger deal to everyone than it was for me, but at the same time I do understand why it is something to talk about.”

Smollett also said, “I didn’t talk to Ellen so that people could, be like ‘oh my God, let’s see what Jussie does in his bedroom in his private life.’ But I did talk to her so that people understood that they’re not alone. That’s all.”

The storyline of his character, Jamal Lyon, and his father’s feelings on his sexuality is a creative opportunity that he doesn’t take for granted.

It’s “feeding my soul,” he said.
