Kendrick Lamar breaks 'global' Spotify record following 'To Pimp a Butterfly' release

Kendrick Lamar surprised his fans by releasing his new album To Pimp a Butterfly early and he’s now enjoying the success of its release.

A spokesperson for streaming site Spotify has confirmed the album, which was made available on Sunday night unexpectedly, has broken a “global record” with 9.6 million downloads in its first full day available.

Los Angeles Times reports the rep said the album has broken the record for the “most streams in a single day worldwide.”

It was previously believed Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly wouldn’t be released for a few more days. His Grammy-nominated debut album good kid, m.A.A.d city has sold over 1 million copies to date.

One fellow rapper completely smitten with Lamar’s new album is Kanye West, who tweeted about it in the past day or so.

“KENDRICK IS AN INSPIRATION. THANK YOU FOR THE VIBRATIONS AND THE SPIRIT,” he wrote. “YOUR MEANING, MESSAGE AND EXECUTION ARE GIFTS TO THE WORLD.”
