'Mulaney' finally cancelled, says Fox chairwoman

Why it took this long is anyone's guess, but Fox finally pulled the plug on their poorly-rated, ill-received new sitcom Mulaney.

The news comes from Deadline, who spoke to Dana Walden, Fox TV Group chairwoman about John Mulaney's now-cancelled sitcom and also the company's hopefulness on the not-yet-renewed New Girl and The Mindy Project. Walden also notes she'd love to have a two-hour comedy block on Tuesday nights again and are now looking forward to their upcoming fall line-up, which Mulaney is not a part of.

This news isn't shocking. After it gathered a meager 2.3 million viewers, with 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic, Mulaney had its 16-episode first season cut to thirteen episodes. Later, Mulaney's self-tilted show had its time slot switched from 9:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with Bob's Burgers in Mulaney's original time. The ratings never improved.

Nasim Pedrad, the former Saturday Night Live performer who jumped the variety show's ship to star in this series, is not without a job. She was recently hired on Fox's upcoming Scream Queens. It's not exactly clear, though, what the rest of the cast does now, but it's hard to imagine them without jobs. Mulaney said on WTF with Marc Maron he would go on the stand-up route and move on if Mulaney went belly-up.

For Mulaney's fans, his first show was rough, to say the least. His signature wit and edge were muted by censorship, mass appeal and the static multi-camera style. Over time, it improved slightly or at least proved it could improve, but it never became a good sitcom. This is for the best. John's a great comedian, and he should continue to do great things.
