Philadelphia Eagles release Trent Cole

Outside linebacker Trent Cole was released by the Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday.

The release is a result of Cole and the Eagles not agreeing on a revised contract. The Eagles will save $8.4 million on their 2015 salary cap by releasing Cole and have saved a total of almost $21 million of their salary cap, according to the Associated Press. They saved $7.5 million by trading LeSean McCoy, $6.5 million by releasing cornerback Cary Williams, $4 million by releasing tight end James Casey, and $2.8 million by releasing offensive lineman Todd Herremans.

Cole had wanted to stay with the Eagles.

"We spoke with Trent and his agent and expressed a desire to have him back," Eagles coach Chip Kelly said. "We have been talking for a couple of weeks. However, at this point, we think it's best to let him explore other options around the NFL."

Cole was drafted by the Eagles in 2005. For his first eight seasons he played defensive end. He has played outside linebacker for the last two seasons. In 2013 he had eight sacks and last year he had 14.5 sacks. Cole has 85.5 career sacks, which is second most in Eagles history, behind Reggie White’s 124 sacks, according to ESPN. He has been to two Pro Bowls and was an All-Pro pick in 2009.

Cole becomes an unrestricted free agent immediately. It will be interesting to see where he ends up.
