Sam Strike to play teenage Leatherface in 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' prequel

We heard a lot of rumors yesterday when actor Sam Strike said he was cast in a major U.S. movie, with a lot of blogs speculating he could be the next Spider-Man. Now we know who Strike will play, and it's pretty far from the amazing web-slinger.

According to The Wrap, Strike has been cast as Leatherface in the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel, Leatherface.

Leatherface will take place in the 1970's and follow Jackson, a teenager who will grow up to be the terrifying killer from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

The upcoming horror film is being directed by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, who previously directed the French horror film Inside. They also directed the short "X is for Xylophone" in the recent anthology The ABCs of Death 2. The screenplay for Leatherface will be written by Seth M. Sherwood.

Although it's a prequel, Leatherface is expected to be in the same continuity of the rebooted series that began with Texas Chainsaw 3D in 2013.

Strike himself is a British actor who appeared in EastEnders, a soap opera in the U.K.

It's weird to think of a killer like Leatherface, running around wearing a mask made of human skin and wielding a chainsaw, depicted as a young, attractive teenage boy. But this project is the latest in a series of horror projects showing us the origins of famous killers, such as 2007's Halloween, which showed Michael Myers as a young boy before he became a killer. There's also the A&E series Bates Motel depicting the origins of Norman Bates, although he was always a much more human character than Leatherface or Michael Myers.

The previous Texas Chainsaw movie wasn't quite a box office hit, grossing $34 million domestically on a $20 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. Is this a franchise audiences are interested in seeing more of? And will the idea of a teenage Leatherface drive fans to the theaters?
