Status of US Ebola patient’s condition improves

The condition of a healthcare worker, who contracted Ebola abroad and is being treated in the U.S., has been improving, according to the National Institutes of Health.

NBC News noted that the worker was evacuated from Sierra Leone earlier this month and transported to a facility near their home in the U.S.

"The status of the patient with Ebola virus disease being treated at the NIH Clinical Center has improved from serious to fair condition," NIH said in a statement. "No additional details about the patient are being shared at this time."

The patient was part of more than a dozen others who were also transported out of the country and are now being monitored for symptoms at a health facilities near them. They each remain under a 21-day watch.

The often-fatal Ebola virus has ravaged the West African nations of Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia for over a year. It is the worst outbreak in history and has claimed the lives of almost 10,400 people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
