5th grader who jumped to death upset after losing chess match (Report)

Authorities have concluded their investigation into the death of a 5th grader who jumped out of a school window after losing a chess match with another student.

The Record noted that Police Chief Joseph Faulborn Jr. said that the investigation concluded that 10-year-old boy jumped “headfirst, unforced, unassisted and of his own accord.”

The police report also stated that the child was in tears after his opponent captured his king and did not say “checkmate.”

“Do you want me to do something drastic?” a lunch aide recalled hearing the boy say to his opponent after the game.

He then handed the other child a note and told him not to open it until he got to the cafeteria. The lunch aide then said she took the note and by the time she turned around it was too late.

“There was no criminal activity on the part of any individual that would warrant further investigation or criminal charges,” Faulborn said in a statement. “The Dumont Police Department investigation of this incident is concluded and the case closed.”

As CBS New York previously reported, the child at Grant Elementary School in Dumont, New Jersey leaped to his death from a second story window about 25 feet off the ground last month. He later died at the hospital.
