Angelina Jolie considered to direct 'Captain Marvel'

Angelina Jolie may soon make her superhero debut, but it won't be in a pair of tights. Reports suggest she's under consideration to direct Marvel's upcoming Captain Marvel.

The tip comes from Collider, whom claim their Marvel sources say she's definitely considered to helm their new property. This comes after some reports which suggested she was also in contention to direct a different superhero movie, Wonder Woman, for Warner Bros. That job, however, went to Patty Jenkins (Monster) last night.

Should Jolie choose to direct Captain Marvel, the film would mark her fourth or fifth film in the director's chair, as she already called the shots on In the Land of Blood and Honey, last year's Unbroken and the upcoming By the Sea, expected to be released later this year.

She also was set to follow-up this year's effort with her Richard Leakey biopic Africa, but it's unclear if that would come first or later if she accepted the Marvel gig. Collider suggests the Leakey film is slated to start production this summer, but may be falling apart due to financial reasons. If that's true, then Jolie is, indeed, open to direct the upcoming superhero movie, which is set to be released on November 2, 2018.

While Unbroken suggested she needs a little more time on the burner before she helmed another large-scale production, Jolie does make sense from a publicity stand-point. She is a name, and would bring in audiences just by being attached to the project alone. That said, Marvel is known for getting their say on their projects more than most studios, and would Jolie be too much of a name to let them have some control on her work? It'll have to be seen. First, let's see if she gets the job at all.

It is encouraging, though, that two female filmmakers may soon be directing two of the hottest superhero properties in the works today, after only one woman, Lexi Alexander (Punisher: War Zone) has ever called the shots on such a project before.
