Atlanta Braves trade Craig Kimbrel, Melvin Upton Jr. to San Diego Padres

On Opening Night, the Atlanta Braves traded closer Craig Kimbrel and outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. to the San Diego Padres for outfielders Carlos Quentin, Cameron Maybin, two minor leaguers and a draft pick.

CBS Sports was the first to report the trade on Sunday night, which each team later confirmed.

The deal sent Kimbrel, 26, and Upton, 30, to the Padres for 28-year-old Maybin, 32-year-old Quentin, minor leaguers Matt Wisler and Jordan Paroubeck and the 41st overall pick in next year's draft.

ESPN noted that San Diego has acquired $80.35 million in guaranteed salaries for both Kimbrel and Upton, but drops the $24 million guaranteed owed to Quentin and Maybin.

"With the chance to acquire Kimbrel, who's one of the best in the game, if not the best, it was a price we were willing to pay," said the Padres new general manager A.J. Preller. “It's an opportunity to strengthen our club."

Kimbrel is a four-time All-Star who lead the National League in saves last season with 47.

Upton is the center fielder formerly known as B.J. Upton. He will share the outfield play for the Padres with his little brother Justin Upton who will start in left field.
