DMX accused of robbing man at New Jersey gas station

Rapper DMX is being investigated by Newark, New Jersey police for allegedly robbing a man at an Exxon gas station early Sunday at 12:30 a.m.

A 21-year-old man told police that he recognized DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, at the gas station. He began a conversation with a man in DMX’s entourage when the man showed the victim a gun, then demanded he hand over his money, police say.

Newark police spokesman Sgt. Ronald Glover told NJ.com that the victim said he took $3,200 from his pocket. DMX “snatched the money out of his hand,” then jumped into a black Cadillac Escalade to flee the scene. There were four Cadillac Escalades, which all left at the same time.

The victim slowly followed the vehicles down McCarthey Highway and was able to see one of the license plate numbers.

A witness told WABC that there were other fans who surrounded DMX at the gas station to take pictures with him. The witness claims he is friends with the victim and speculated that a member of DMX’s entourage thought the victim had a gun. When the victim took his hands out of his pocket, he showed him the money. DMX allegedly saw the money and grabbed it.

“DMX took the money, but the bodyguard was the one who glanced us at the handle of his gun,” the victim told WABC. "He's like, 'come on, yo, we out we out talking to his entourage.’”

No charges have been filed and police told NJ.com that they are in the “early stages” of their investigation.

DMX has had plenty of run-ins with the law. In 2013, he was reportedly pulled over for drunk driving, but his rep said that he was not charged.
